Electric cars are considered to be a hot thing in the car industry. They have taken up a lot of resources, and every manufacturer seems to be interested. However, why are these cars yet to take off? The technology is there, and it is great for the environment, and the latest models have nice designs, but consumers are yet to embrace them. It is estimated that sale for electric vehicles is less than 5% of all vehicle sales. Why are people still driving fuel guzzlers when they could drive environmentally friendly cars. These are the reasons.
Range
Another issue concerning electric vehicles is their range, which is the distance they can travel on a full charge. Although several advancements have been made in this area, electric cars are yet to match the range provided by regular cars. For instance, you cannot drive very far or go on a family cross-country road trip with your electric car.
Performance
Another issue with electric cars is that their performance is limited. That is because their engine performance is low. You cannot go fast on the highway, and the car’s battery may be drained quickly before you even know. Therefore, you cannot do many things with electric cars as you would with a regular car. As you know, many cars get sold because of their performance.
Charging Stations
Although car companies have made strides in the manufacture of electric cars, many cities do not have adequate infrastructure that supports these cars. As a result, there are few charging stations across the country. On the other hand, there are gas stations on every road. Therefore, you can easily get stranded with an electric car as soon as the battery gets depleted.
Charging Time
You need to consider how long it takes to fill the vehicle gas. The time it takes to recharge your car battery is about 3 hours. Depending on the size of the battery, it can take over 8 hours to recharge your electric car battery. Therefore, even if there are charging stations everywhere, it does not make sense to wait for a car for 8 hours to power up.
Additional Costs
Replacing your car is not only an additional cost that comes with having an electric car, but you also have to fit your home garage with a charging station. Purchasing and installing the charging station will cost you a lot of money. Also, you have to keep the equipment running and operational as required.
